Pe Rocsana si Razvan ii cunosc de multi ani. Nunta lor a avut loc intr-o zi relativ friguroasa de sfarsit de octombrie. Nu prea am avut conditii pentru prea multe fotografii in aer liber insa totusi am reusit sa stoarcem tot ce era posibil din locatiile care le-am avut si pana la urma totul a iesit superb.

Nikon D800(E) – OFFICIAL !

Inca o data, zvonurile se arata adevarate. Avem oficial Nikon D800(E) cu 36 MPX !!!

Pretul e aproape cat era D3s cand a iesit din productie. E clar ca D800 nu prea vine ca un upgrade direct la D700 care costa momentan aproape la jumate ( daca se mai gaseste ). D700 e pentru cei care trag low light, iar D800 e pentru cei care trag printuri mari, studio etc. As putea sa pun pariu ca urmeaza si lansarea unui D700s ( sau D800s sau whateva ) – care sa fie de fapt o camera semipro, mid-size si care sa poata trage in continuare low-light – probabil cu senzorul de pe D4 ( sau chiar D3s ) pentru ca altfel nu vad de ce Nikon ar fi renuntat la productia D700 ( chiar daca avea 4 ani ca model ). Bineinteles o sa urmeze si un D4x ( cu senzorul asta de 36 mpx ). E de asemenea CLAR ca senzorul asta mare va avea performante slabe la ISO mare ( e si normal ) – deci trebuie aparate pentru toti in functie de nevoi.

Acum cu noul senzor, e destul de evident ca si obiectivele vor trebui sa poata sa “duca” rezolutia si deci … nu prea mai e loc de compromisuri daca iti iei D800. Cel mai probabil D800 va fi cumparat de posesorii unui D300 sau chiar cei care au D3x.

Oricum deja cursa senzorilor a cam ajuns la un nivel la care sincer parca nu mai simti nevoia aia “pfoaaa frate iti dai seama cum trage ala ???” – care era in trecut.
Cei mai multi utilizatori de D700 nu cred ca vor renunta prea curand la ele pur si simplu pentru ca nu au nevoie de 36mpx daca pentru asta or sa renute la performantele low light.

Totusi pentru cei care au nevoie de o rezolutie mare ( peisagisti, cei care printeaza MARE, fotografii de moda, produs, studio etc ) – 36 mpx la 6000 $/Euro e afacerea secolului Mai ales cu versiunile E/non E disponibile pentru D800 – e cam unu pentru fiecare.

So once again the rumors were correct. We have a D800(E) with 36 mpx. Question now is … who will buy it? Would a previews owner of a D700 consider purchasing it? Hmm, to be honest I am not that convinced, as a typical D700 user would need good low light performance at an affordable price – that’s pretty much the main reason most of the D700 buyers made the purchase in the first place. If they needed the higher res, they would have either purchased the D3x in the past 4 years or even moved to Canon 5D Mk II. I am talking about the D700 people that actually TAKE PHOTOS and do so for a living. Not the spoiled rich folks that simply bought a D700 simply because they “READ” it’s a great camera and they could afford it.

So leaving those aside, in my opinion, the D800 doesn’t really come as a D700 replacement. Even the price is from another league as the D700. The d800 comes priced almost as high as the last batch of D3s and almost twice as high as the last batch of D700. However, $3000 for a 36 mpx sensor camera is easily considerable as a GREAT DEAL – but as I said, I don’t think the average D700 owner is not a D800 “wanter”. It’s very clear that high-iso performance will be quite low considering the current alternatives. Even the new D4 ( by the looks of the first samples ) doesn’t come with an earth-shattering improvement in this aspect over the D3/D3s, so it is pretty obvious the D800 will not do so well in this regard. You might say it has highest base iso set at 6400 ( same as D3/D700 ) but I am pretty sure that 100% wise, the differences will be quite obvious.

It may be a an upgrade for some D300 owners or others. It may even be an upgrade for the D3x users ( although I am pretty sure the D4x will show it’s face pretty soon ) – because of the impressive resolution. As a currently owner of a D3 camera, I know for a fact that I wouldn’t purchase a D800 simply because I don’t need the “new things” and I DO need the “old things” it lacks.

Not to mention that usually the D700 users would also need to upgrade most of their line of lenses for the D800 upgrade in order to give the new BIG BOY the credit it deserves.

I am willing to bet that a D700s ( or D800s or whatever ) is just around the corner as Nikon really needs a mid-sized, semi-professional low-light camera now that the D700 is gone.

All in all – as I said – 36mpx for a $3000 – jeez – the world has gone MAD. Bring it on Canon !

Nikon 85mm 1.8G vs 1.8D vs 1.4D – small experiment

Buna seara din nou – asa cum probabil ati citit deja in postul referitor la D3 vs D4 – am reusit sa ma joc putin cu noile jucarii de la Nikon: corpul D4 si noul 85mm f:1.8 G AF-s. Acest post o sa-l dedic obiectivului mentionat pe care l-am pus sa se bata cu 2 obiective deja clasice din era filmului – adevarati titani ai vremurilor nu chiar apuse : cele doua obiective de 85mm AF-D si anume varianta 1.8 si 1.4 intr-un test facut in graba. Era si regele 85mm f1.4 G pe acolo prin magazin insa nu era chiar la indemana si nu am mai vrut sa astept sa-l gaseasca baietii asa ca testul s-a desfasurat fara el – oricum telul meu era sa vad diferentele intre cele doua 1.8-uri.

Toate cele 3 obiective au fost montate pe D3 care era pe un trepied – setarile au fost facute ca si la testul de corpuri – RAW + JPG Fine – Standard cu totul pe ZERO – exceptand WB care a fost lasat pe AUTO. ISO folosit aici a fost constant si anume 250. Subiectul de “tragere” a fost obiectivul Nikon 50mm f:1.8 AF-D care a fost folosit la testul dinainte. De remarcat ca aici nu prea am avut parte chiar de liniste, testul s-a facut mai mult pe graba. Ba chiar intre teste, inainte sa montez 1.4-le cineva mi-a mutat obiectivul 50mm si astfel a trebuit sa-l pun din nou la locul lui – a se observa ca acum are alt capac de spate. Scopul testului a fost sa vad in principiu cum se comporta noul obiectiv comparativ cu cele vechi la diafragme deschise ( 1.8 – 5.6 ) in ceea ce priveste – sharpness , contrast, bokeh, redare culori. Repet totul a fost facut pe fuga, era harmalaie in magazin, clienti, angajati, nu chiar un cadru propice pentru teste serioase deci va rog nu dati cu parul Nu am avut timp sa testez performantele in colturi, aberatii croematice in diverse ocazii sau vignetarea – sper ca alta data sa pot face un review complet asa cum scrie la carte.

De data asta o sa pun imaginile full din prima in spatele linkurilor pentru ca voi sa puteti sa vedeti mai repede rezultatele full – fara cropuri pentru ca aici ne cam intereseaza si centrul pentru resolutie/contrast dar si marginile pentru calitatea bokehului.

Atentie : ordinea sample-urilor este urmatoarea : Nikon 85mm f:1.8 G AF-S / Nikon 85mm f:1.8 AF-D / Nikon 85mm f:1.4 AF-D

Hello again – as you probably have read by now – I was able to play around for a bit with Nikon’s new toys : the D4 and the new 85mm f:1.8G AF-S lens. This post is dedicated to the new 85 lens. I have put it up against 2 of the Nikon’s 85 classics from the film era : the 2 85mm AF-D versions still available on the market : the 1.8 and the 1.4. Mind you this was done in a rush. The 85 1.4G was around the store but the boys didn’t know exactly where, and I didn’t want to wait for them to look for it – the main goal of this small test was to see the differences between the 2 1.8s anyway.

All 3 lens were mounted on my D3 which was on a tripod – all settings were similar to the other test : RAW + JPG Fine – Standard – everything set to ZERO, all other settings turned OFF – except for the WB which was left on AUTO mode. The ISO used for the testing was constant – ISO 250. The subject was the Nikon 50mm f:1.8 AF-D I used on the D3 vs D4 test. Again I would like to emphasize that this was not a real test, as the store was a bit crowded with people at that moment, in the middle of the test even, someone just lifted my subject 50mm lens not knowing I was in the middle of a test – please notice it was given some different lens caps as well on the 1.4 shots. I had to re-put it in the old place but the box was not set up in the same angle as when the 2 1.8s were tested – not that important anyway. My main goal here was to see how the new G lens would perform against it’s older brothers only at some opened apertures ( 1.8 – 5.6 ) in terms of central sharpness, contrast, bokeh. I didn’t have the time to test the lens for corner performance, CAs or Vignetting. Maybe I will be able to repeat the test in a more “suitable” atmosphere

This time I will use the full size photos ( behind the thumb links ) – not crops as we need both the central area to see sharpness/contrast and the corners for OOF bokeh quality.

De dragul artei, va atasez si alte 3 fotografii facute aiurea prin magazin cu cele 3 obiective – nu au nici o treaba una cu alta, sunt facute din mana, la cateva minute una de alta deci nu e un test prea precis. A se nota ca fotografia facuta cu obiectivul 1.4D ( deci ultima ) e trasa la F2 si celelalte doua la F1.8 ( imaginile sunt la ISO 400 si nu au chiar setarile de expunere identice )

Just for the sake of it, I am also throwing in 3 shots I took around the store randomly. They are in no way related to one another, are handheld and were taken minutes apart – so it’s not really a benchmark – please note that the photo taken with the 1.4D ( the last one ) was shot at F2 and the other ones at F1.8 ( images are all 3 shot at ISO 400 – the exposure is not identical )

CONCLUZIE/CONCLUSION

Per total – obiectivul s-a dovedit a fi destul de impresionant – fiind un pas MARE fata de predecesorul sau ( versiunea 1.8D ). Parca observ lui 1.8D tendinta de a focaliza uuuuun pic mai in spatele punctului dorit fata de celelalte 2 – probabil o mica ajustare de fine-tune ar fi rezolvat treaba. Oricum nu e ceva deranjant.

Dupa cum se observa, daca discutam despre performantele wide open ( 1.8 ) diferentele intre cele doua obiective sunt EVIDENTE in ceea ce priveste detaliul si contrastul, obiectivul nou pur si simplu spulberand fratele mai vechi la acest capitol ( am repetat testul la 1.8 cu 1.8-ul AF-D pentru cam crezut inital ca am gresit eu focusul dar rezultatul a fost identic ). In ceea ce priveste performantele lui 1.4D la aceasta diafragma ( 1.8 ) – acesta sta mai bine ca 1.8D-ul la capitolul sharpness – as putea spune cam la fel ca 1.8G-ul – dar pierde in fata noului venit la capitolul contrast. Foarte impresionante performantele aici ale noului 1.8G. In ceea ce priveste Bokeh-ul, nu prea sesizez diferente notabile intre cele doua 1.8-uri dar se observa o trecere evidenta cand trecem la 1.4D care se prezinta cu un Bokeh vizibil mai cremos. Nu degeaba i se spunea “the cream master”.

La 2.8 stam cam la fel ca la 1.8, singura diferenta notabila e ca 1.8D-ul castiga un pic teren la sharpness – in rest cam aceiasi situatie la contrast cu 1.8G-ul in frunte – la bokeh deja diferentele incep sa se miscoreze intre cele doua 1.8-uri si fratele mai mare 1.4 nemai fiind un salt major.

La f4 lucrurile incep sa se mai “stranga” – deja nu mai exista o diferenta deranjanta intre toate 3 obiectivele la sharpness. La bokeh poate sunt eu nebun insa as inclina sa spun ca s-au inversat un pic rolurile, parca cele 2 1.8-uri fiind o idee mai soft ca marele 1.4 – lucrul asta se poate datora si diferentei de expunere efectiva – cu toate ca eram in interior,erau aceleasi surse de lumina tot tp, iar eu am folosit EXACT aceleasi setari la toate, cadrul tras cu 1.4 – pare o idee mai intunecat. Incredibil e si faptul ca intre cele 1.8-uri s-a mai micsorat diferenta la contrast – ciudat totusi faptul ca 1.4-ele a cam ramas pe ultimul loc aici.

La 5.6 situatia se prezinta cam ca la F4 intre cei 3 competitori.

Ideea de incheiere e ca noul obiectiv de la Nikon a ridicat destul de mult stacheta in ceea ce priveste calitatea imaginii de la un obiectiv luminos si la un pret decent. In ceea ce priveste rezolutia wide open lucrurile se prezinta incredibil de bine fiind destul de detasat fata de vechiul 1.8D – iar la capitolul contrast este de necontestat ca e CEL MAI BUN de departe dintre cele 3 obiective testate. Din punct de vedere al Bokeh-ului nu prezinta o diferenta fata de vechiul 1.8, dar cum era si de asteptat – este devansat in setarile wide de mai marele si mai scumpul 1.4D. Diferenta de pret intre cele 1.8-uri este relativ minima avand in vedere ca vine cu niste plusuri EVIDENTE si parerea mea este ca isi merita pretul de 2300 RON cu cat se preconizeaza ca va atinge rafturile magazinelor in februarie. Poate la un test urmator mai amanuntit, o sa il compar si cu 85-ul 1.4 G – ar trebui sa fie destul de interesant.

Note the tendency of the 1.8D to focus a biiiiiiiit behind the desired point when compared to the other 2 lens – however the difference is minimal and doesn’t affect the results too much.

Bottom line is that the new 1.8G lens does set up a new benchmark considering sharpness and contrast from a fast aperture lens – and at an relatively affordable price. Wide open, the resolution seems nothing short of SPECTACULAR, outperforming it’s older brother ( the 1.8D). Contrast wise – it’s very clear that is the winner of the test – by a big margin on all apertures. Bokeh wise, it doesn’t seem to bring anything different when compared to it’s brother ( the 1.8D ) – but as expected it’s outperformed by the bigger and more expensive 1.4D – which is also known as the “cream master”. The price difference between the 2 versions of 1.8 lenses is not going to be too big it seems and in my opinion the G it’s well worth the extra $ because it brings some obvious improvements. Maybe at a future test I will have it up against the King of all 85′s – the Nikon AF-s 85mm f:1.4G – things should be interesting.

Digital Album – Oana & Catalin – sept 2011

Experienta cu Oana si Catalin a fost una relativ deosebita. Totul a inceput de la telefonul primit de la Oana prin care ma intreba daca sunt liber pe 17-sept-2011 pentru nunta lor, dar eu deja aveam o rezervare pentru ziua respectiva – fiind una din “acele zile” pentru care primesc solicitari foarte multe, dar bineinteles nu pot sa onorez decat primul cuplu cu care discut Putin dezamagita de indisponibilitatea mea … a mai revenit cu un apel la o saptamana dupa spunandu-mi ca totusi ar vrea din tot sufletul ca eu sa le lucrez albumul nuntii si eventual sa ii pozez separat de ziua nuntii – sa gasim o modalitate – moment in care am venit cu propunerea ca pentru ziua nuntii sa-i pun in legatura cu un prieten de-al meu, si coleg de “meserie” – fotograful Vali Veliscu, ramanand ca mai apoi, ulterior zilei de 17 sept sa ii pozez separat pe ei doi intr-o sedinta foto after wedding. S-au intalnit cu Vali, a ramas stabilit ca el si colegul lui cameraman sa se ocupe de fotografierea si filmarea in ziua nuntii lor, iar eu sa ma ocup de o sedinta foto si mai apoi de punerea la punct a intregului album de nunta. Zis si facut, ziua cununiei civile a fost in vinerea dinainte nuntii, timp in care eu am fost disponibil asa ca acolo am tras poze in paralel cu Vali, iar totul a decurs perfect comform planului – sedinta foto ulterioara s-a dovedit una foarte reusita, cu o vreme excelenta, la care mai adaugam si locatia deosebita si talentul celor doi miri de a “poza”, talentul Cristinei ( daca nu ma insel ) la jucat rolul asistentului meu ( cand era nevoie de cineva sa tina blitul extern ) si cu totul albumul a iesit superb.

Nikon D4

Imi pare rau dar din cauza faptului ca Nikon D4 inca nu este disponibil in varianta finala pana la lansarea in magazine – nu imi mai este permis sa postez nimic referitor la testele ce au avut loc cu un body care era versiune BETA! De fapt am fost respectuos rugat de cineva de la Nikon sa le scot, nu e vorba de o impunere – cum ma intreaba lumea Mi s-a spus ca versiunea finala va avea imbunatatiri si nu e corect sa se faca o imagine ireala a lui D4 inainte de lansarea in magazine.Va multumesc pentru intelegere.

I am sorry but due to the fact that the Nikon D4 in it’s final version is not available until the actual sale launch, I am no longer allowed to post any info regarding the testing that was done with the BETA version. By allowed I mean that I was kindly asked by a Nikon rep to take the article down. Reason? The final version of the D4 will have some improvements over the tested one and it wouldn’t be fair to create a false image of the D4 before the sale launch. Thank you for understanding.

Am ales aici o sumara colectie a unor fotografii mai reusite si mai semnificative ale anului 2011 – vizionare placuta!

Desi am lucrat ( si inca mai lucrez ocazional ) ca webdesigner freelancer de ceva ani, dupa sute de proiecte web terminate cu succes, si zeci de site-uri pentru “altii” – spre rusinea mea inca nu am reusit sa imi pun “osu” la treaba si sa-mi fac un site complet functional pentru mine asa ca recurg la optiunea cea mai simpla : BLOG-ul pentru a incerca cat de cat sa am acelasi rezultat ( insa promit ca imi fac si site in curand ) E foarte adevarata zicala aia de o stiti cu totii cu cizmaru’

Fiind totusi primul meu post, pe primul meu blog nu va mai plictisesc si va multumesc ca ati trecut pe aici – sper sa aveti o sedere placuta ( si sper ca atunci cand chiar va citii cineva postul asta – sa mai fie deja si alt continut existent pe blog )
